Annual anthropology conference

The annual conference of the Australian Anthropological Society will be held at Macquarie University from 28 November to 1 December 2023.

The theme of the 2023 conference is Vulnerabilities; conceptualised as “entailing uncertain and potentially risky kinds of exposure and openness to forces that transcend the individual, the local, the human”

ANSA will organise a panel during the conference, and an afternoon of workshops and social events aimed specifically at honours & postgraduate students, and early career researchers on Tuesday, November 28th.

Pre-conference workshop

On the 28th, (the day before the conference officially commences), ANSA is running a half-day event for students filled with activities, presentations, and workshops. Sign up for the event when you register for the conference.

Time Event Description
12:00-1:00PM Lunch and Welcome During the start of the afternoon, we will open the pre-conference post-graduate workshop and play some icebreaker games. A free lunch will be served alongside the introductions, courtesy of the AAS and the Macquarie University Conference team.
1:00PM-2:30PM Publishing Panel Publishing papers, books, or writing for a broader audience? During this workshop, seasoned academics will tell you about the ins and outs of the process and we will workshop some best practices in publishing your article or thesis.
2:30PM-3:30PM Creative Anthropology Concurrent mini-workshops to try out ‘visual ethnography’ through photography; or to practise creative and poetry writing.
3:30PM-4:00PM Tea Time! No details needed.
4:00PM-5:30PM Roundtable: Staying Safe in Anthropology Several academics and early career researchers will reflect on one of the most basic rights that is too often broken: safety. As students we are constantly confronted with unsafe environments: during fieldwork, conferences, and in our academic and non-academic work environments.
5:30PM-late? Drinks & Dates Evening drinks at the U-bar. Buy your own drink & dinner, and participate in some speed-dating games to get to know each other better in an informal and fun setting before the conference kicks off properly tomorrow.

ANSA student scholarships for the aas conference

Every year, ANSA distributes scholarships to aid students in attending the Australian Anthropological Society conference. These are generously funded by the AAS to ensure anthropology students and early career researchers have the opportunity to present their research and participate in formal conference proceedings.

Scholarship money can be used as the recipient wishes to reimburse travel, accommodation, and conference registration costs. Funds will be distributed once the ANSA executive committee has made their final decision and the selected students have confirmed their conference registration.

To be eligible for a scholarship, you must:

  • Be a current student or recent graduate

  • Be presenting at the 2023 AAS conference

  • Not have received an ANSA student scholarship before

  • Be members of both the AAS and ANSA

Applications for student scholarships have now closed.

Scholarship recipients will be informed by Friday October 20. Early Bird registration closes October 28, so recipients are encouraged to register before this date once they have scholarship confirmation.

ANSA Panel: Becoming anthropologists

submissions closed!

The annual conference of the Australian Anthropological Society will take place in Sydney, hosted by Macquarie University from 28 November to 1 December. The theme of the conference is "Vulnerabilities," and the call for papers has now closed. Presenters will be contacted shortly.

ANSA Panel: Becoming Anthropologists (panel description)
Some research projects are difficult to hammer into a shape that fits the conference theme or proposed panels. Or, perhaps you feel like you're still in the exploratory phase of your research and you want a place to present your initial ideas. If that rings true, you might consider submitting a paper to the ANSA Panel: Becoming Anthropologists. Through this workshop, we aim to offer an inclusive, friendly, and safe space to explore ideas or to practice your presentation skills. The ANSA Panel is a fantastic space to meet fellow anthropology students, and offers a great forum for feedback and discussion!

Note: ANSA Scholarships will be distributed after the completion of the conference.
